The bone of contention with Apple’s security features is that it allows hackers and software such as Phone Breaker an in, because the two-step verification process isn’t spread out across all of Apple’s services. The argument against that, is that most users would not want to be inconvenienced by the added security features.

Le logiciel Phone Breaker de Elcomsoft s’est connaitre du grand public cette année suite au piratage des photos de célébrités nues, en partie sur iCloud. Le logiciel permet de s’infiltrer dans un compte iCloud pour y récupérer des informations sur l’utilisateur ou ses documents stockés en ligne tout simplement.

Genauer muss man sagen, dass die Software nicht in jedem Fall die Umgehung der Zwei-Schritt-Authentifizierung erlaubt. Hat ein iCloud-Nutzer das Feature eingeschaltet, muss ein möglicher “Einbrecher” neben dem Login und Passwort eben auch die Antwort auf eine der hinterlegten Sicherheitsfragen wissen. Das ist so schwer aber nicht, wenn man sich vorstellt, wie viele Informationen von Nutzern tatsächlich online verfügbar sind. Gerade Personen des öffentlichen Lebens geben mittelfristig Informationen Preis, ohne es zu beabsichtigen. Im vergangenen Jahr wurde beispielsweise das erste Auto von Daniela Katzenberger auf eBay versteigert. Eine Sicherheitsfrage nach eben dem ersten Auto einer Person ist so selten nicht anzutreffen. Das gleiche gilt für Geburtsnamen, Haustiere, etc. pp.

An update to Elcomsoft's Phone Breaker software now makes it easier for good or bad guys to bypass Apple's vaunted new two-factor authentication to steal your iCloud stuff. As before, the hackers would need some information to start with -- either your Apple ID/password plus a two-factor code, or a digital token stolen from, say, your laptop.

It’s not as scary as it sounds – the software can only be used once the attacker already has an Apple ID and password, together with either a second trusted device or your recovery key. A phishing attack is the most common way to obtain these, so as long as you use strong, unique passwords and don’t click on links in emails claiming to be from Apple, you should be safe. But it does allow users of the software to download either entire iPhone backups or selected data direct from iCloud much more easily than having to go through a compromised device by hand.

The update allows users to break into iCloud accounts that have two-factor authentication enabled, the company announced on Thursday.
